Re: help
02/16Cochineal is an insect that thrives on Opuntia as well as many other plants. We call them mealy bugs. It's possible cochinea is part of the species name. This site has good examples of mealy bug infested pads waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph3.htm The insects are farmed in Oaxaca on Opuntia pads for use as dye for wool. Sandra

Re: help
08/14Shlosh,
I'm afraid I'm not gonna be of much help specie-wise, but I have one of these as well, that I
found in a garden in Chichicastenango. Guatemala, and snuk thru customs (one pad). They had the plant pruned in a "christmas tree" shape, and I stupidly thought it might grow that way. I did later see this specie in a boanical garden and have the name written down somewhere, but you will probably pass away before I find it....
Cochineal may have been commercially produced on this Opuntia, and the insect is a sucking parasite, but not the same insect we commonly call a mealy bug. Check out the Wikipedia entry. -
